# Telegram Bot Setup

> Configure Telegram publishing for Careers Engine.

Careers Engine can publish opportunities to Telegram using a bot connected to your target channel or chat.

This guide covers creating the bot, configuring the destination, and obtaining the credentials used by Careers Engine.

***

## Create a Telegram bot

Open Telegram and start a conversation with [@BotFather](https://t.me/BotFather).

1. Send `/newbot`.
2. Choose a display name and username for the bot.
3. Copy the bot token provided by BotFather.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Treat your bot token like a password. Never commit it to Git or share it publicly.

***

## Configure the destination

Add the bot to your target Telegram channel and grant it permission to publish messages. For a group, ensure it has the required messaging permissions.

Obtain the target chat ID and configure it alongside the bot token.

```env theme={null}
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN=your_bot_token
TELEGRAM_CHAT_ID=your_chat_id
```

The chat ID must identify the destination where Careers Engine should publish opportunities.

***

## Verify the configuration

Ensure your `.env` file contains the required Telegram variables and the `DATA_DIR` path configured in the [Configuration guide](https://careers-engine.zenyukti.in/getting-started/configuration.md).

***

## Troubleshooting

Common issues include:

* Invalid bot token.
* Bot not added to the destination.
* Missing channel or group permissions.
* Incorrect chat ID.
* Telegram API rate limits.

***

## Next step

Continue with GitHub Actions to configure the credentials required for automated publishing.
